Often said to be the “crown jewel” of national park lodges, the Norwegian villa style of the El Tovar Hotel might, at first glance, appear out of place amidst the rust-colored cliffs of Grand Canyon. It opened in 1905, when the European aesthetic was considered the height of refinement to American designers, and, perched atop the South Rim’s famous cliff’s edge views, the El Tovar still impresses over 100 years later. Rooms are simple, with Mission-inspired furnishings and vintage park photographs, but the incomparable location and five-star dining hall views make this lodge a must-see.
